Biography

Basile Njei, MD, PhD, is an accomplished physician-scientist, gastroenterologist, and global health leader dedicated to advancing the diagnosis and management of liver diseases through integrating artificial intelligence (AI), epidemiology, and clinical innovation.

He serves as Co-Director of the Yale International Medicine Program in the Section of Digestive Diseases at Yale School of Medicine and as a staff gastroenterologist at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven.

Born and initially trained in Cameroon, Dr. Njei completed his medical degree with honors at the University of Yaoundé I. He then received a British Chevening Scholarship to pursue a Master of Public Health (MPH) at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom. He subsequently completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Connecticut and his gastroenterology fellowship at Yale University, where he also earned a PhD in Investigative Medicine.

Dr. Njei’s research has garnered numerous prestigious awards, including the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) Young Investigator Award, the Howard Levine-MD Science Award, the ACG Fellow-in-Training Award, and multiple travel awards recognizing his scholarly contributions. He is internationally recognized for his innovative research applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to hepatology, with a focus on noninvasive fibrosis prediction, MASLD (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease), and early cancer detection.

Dr. Njei has published extensively in high-impact journals and is a sought-after speaker at national and international conferences. His collaborative projects span clinical practice, public health policy, and AI-driven global health initiatives. Beyond his academic work, Dr. Njei is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of physician-scientists and has partnered with health ministries and academic institutions in Africa to strengthen medical education and research capacity.

A dynamic leader, Dr. Njei bridges clinical excellence with digital health innovation, aiming to improve patient outcomes, reduce healthcare disparities, and expand the frontiers of liver disease management worldwide.
